This pop-up exhibition showcases comics and comics art by students participating in the UCSC Arts Division Art and Oppression initiative. The work draws from and responds to comics in the Jim Gunderson & Peter Coha Comics Collection (housed in Special Collections at McHenry Library) and offers new perspectives on the ways comics can reveal and resist discourses of injustice. The art on display emerged from two UCSC comics-making courses: a winter quarter Comics Workshop led by Raty Syka (Environmental Art & Social Practice), and a spring quarter Horror Comics course led by Renée Fox (Literature) and Michael Chemers (Performance, Play, and Design). In both courses, students focused on comics as unique mediums for confronting contemporary issues and for pushing political, sexual, and social boundaries. Working individually or in small groups and inspired by the long historical sweep of comic books represented in Special Collections, students showing their art in this exhibition use comics’ distinctive interplay between visual art, text, and action to imagine new possibilities for a more just world.
