CART Commons   Workshop

Join fellow graduate students, librarians, and archivists to talk about the digitized turn in archival research. In this participatory event, attendees will read in advance two short articles on digital and digitized sources and then meet (via Zoom) to discuss the articles and consider the possibilities, complications, and consequences of drawing on digitized and digital sources in one’s work.

The readings:
Digital sources and digital archives: historical evidence in the digital age by Trevor Owens and Thomas Padilla, International Journal of Digital Humanities, May 2020

The Transnational and the Text-Searchable: Digitized Sources and the Shadows They Cast by Lara Putnam, The American Historical Review, Volume 121, Issue 2, April 2016, Pages 377–402

An interview with author Lara Putnam about her article is also available via Spotify as a supplement to the readings.

Please register via Zoom to attend.

CART Commons programs are hosted by Special Collections & Archives, University Library, in collaboration with the Elisabeth Remak-Honnef Center for Archival Research and Training (CART).

CART Commons fosters a sense of community for UC Santa Cruz graduate students involved in archival research. Gatherings include hands-on archival explorations and informal presentations alongside opportunities to consider questions related to primary source research practices. Please visit the CART Commons website to learn more and join the CART Commons Mailing List.
