Have you ever come across language in library and archival description that seems offensive or outdated? Have you wondered how these descriptions come about, and who decides how to describe people and communities in archival and library materials? Come learn about current efforts in our profession to consciously edit archival description in order to better serve those represented in the materials, as well as researchers and staff. We will be joined by Nick Pillsbury, graduate student at the University of Washington Information School, who is assisting in an audit of archival description in UCSC Special Collections & Archives’ finding aids, and making recommendations for revisions and contextualization.
Here are some recommended resources to provide some background on these topics. Feel free to read and watch before the session, but it’s not a prerequisite to attend and participate in the discussion.
